Smart Combustion Technology

Fuel Flexibility

One of the greatest advantages of ArenaRed’s Combustion Pressure Based Control (CPBC) is the high grade of fuel flexibility. With help of the Combustion Pressure Sensor (CPS) the Electronic Control Unit (ECU) detects the chemical properties of the used fuel. If the fuel properties are within the prescribed specs the injection strategy will be adapted accordingly. This enables the use of the fuel of choice at any moment.

Gaseous Fuels

ArenaRed is highly experienced with the use of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as main fuel. The advantages are cleaner combustion with a lower carbon intensity compared to diesel as well as a price for LNG which is lower than diesel.

Other fuels such as Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as well as the in popularity increasing hydrogen can be used. Hydrogen and CNG can even be mixed in one tank and used in the engine without any problems. This decreases dependency on fuel availability.

The use of alcohols reduces the emissions even further because of the additional oxygen in the molecule. The relative simple production of alcohols from biomass gives them a lot of potential to be 100% CO 2 neutral. When the engine runs on the Reactivity Controlled Compression Ignition (RCCI) principle the engine can handle substantial amounts of water in the alcohol (up to 30%), which could reduce the emissions even more as alcohol diluted with water is much easier (and thus cheaper) to produce than pure alcohols. Our CPBC can handle many different alcohols, even mixed in random blends.

Single Fuel RCCI

RCCI has to be operated with two different fuels, one high octane fuel and one low octane fuel. In automobile applications this can be seen as cumbersome and can discourage people to choose for an engine running RCCI. A solution is that for a high octane fuel is used for both injections, but that a cetane-booster is added to the direct injected fuel to increase reactivity. The added cetane-booster requires a refill of 5 liters every oil change, which could be done by the car mechanic. In this way the car owner has all the benefits of owning a vehicle operating RCCI without having to worry about fueling two different fuels.
